Another Successful Dinner
A crowd of over 250 enjoyed another great night in Cowie Miners Welfare Social Club recently at this, the Rovers 17th Annual Dinner, their sixth such function at Cowie.
Following an excellent previous speakers list which includes Jack Charlton, Jimmy Nichol, Alan Kennedy, and Duncan McKenzie, the Rovers pulled out all the stops to come up once again with a fine top table.
Speakers this year were ex Partick Thistle footballer CHIC CHARNLEY, former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder RONNIE WHELAN and top north east comedian DAVE GREENER.
The night kicked off with the Chairman for the evening NICKY DOCHERTY introducing the top table and prior to the meal being served there was the customary game of heads and tails for the Bottle of Malt Whisky.
After another first class meal was served up to the usual high standards by MICHAEL MORE and his excellent staff the audience sat back and were supremely entertained by Chic Charnley as he regaled his tales of a colourful career in football in the Scottish League.
He was followed by Ronnie Whelan and he had the audience spellbound as he told of his time in playing for the all conquering Liverpool side of the 80's and in the world cup with Ireland The pinnacle of his career was winning the European Cup in 1984
The final speaker was comedian Dave Greener who was to have been here two years ago but was struck by illness and unable to attend then. He was outstanding and closed off a great night with a very funny routine.
Just before the end of the evening though a few more pounds were raised with the auction of a limited edition montage of the Lisbon Lions signed by Billy McNeill
Another successful dinner and thanks to all who attended and hopefully we will see them all back next year. Thanks also need to go to Matt and Ronnie and all the staff at Cowie Miners Welfare and of course Michael More and his staff, the three speakers and the excellent chairman Nicky Docherty.
